Farmhouse Cutting Board DIY

Hello friends!

Today Matt & I are sharing a simple tutorial on how to make a farmhouse cutting board. He loves working with his hands and woodworking is a favorite outlet for him. When the idea came up for this project I immediately knew I wanted the cutting board to be in the shape of a pig. I have a very clear memory of sitting at my grandmother’s breakfast bar eating cereal and admiring her dark wood pig shaped cutting board hanging on the wall.

Here is an inspiration image from Andrea’s blog Pine and Prospect Home. I love the aged patina on these large cutting boards!

First, he started with some narrow strips of walnut from my Dad. Walnut is a dense, hard wood and a great choice for a cutting board.

To attach the strips Matt glued them together with Titebond 111, a good strong wood glue and clamped the pieces together to dry.

In the meantime, I worked on an outline sketch of the pig. As you can see I played around with the tail design before deciding that curly was best!

Once the boards were dry and the sketch drawn on to the boards, Matt cut along the drawn line with his jigsaw.

You can see the pig taking shape!

Once the pig was cut out (and a hole punched for his curly tail) the next step was to lightly sand the edges to smooth them off, then to seal the wood with a food safe oil.

This step brought the rich color and beauty of the wood to life. Once the cutting board was well sealed/oiled and ready to use it found a prominent place on our countertop. Even though this project was completed several years ago (before the kitchen remodel) I still love how the cutting board turned out and I use it every week!

I hope this simple DIY cutting board tutorial was helpful and inspirational for adding a personal, practical touch to your kitchen! Until next time, take care,

Rachel
